Why does my email address need verification?
When you invite people to meetings they need to be sure that the email address sending out the invitation is legitimate and belongs to a person they know. If the email addresses were not verified, anyone could claim to be you when they send out invitations. Because email addresses are verified by the user responding to a verification email message, people you invite to meetings can be confident that it is you who are sending the invite.

Why do I need to provide my name?
The only reason for this is that when people receive an invite from you, they know who the sender is without necessarily having to know your email address. The name is also included in a list of invitees so that other individuals have a more friendly way of knowing who is attending than by looking at the email addresses alone. You can give a made up name or pseudonym or nickname if you like as long is it does not confuse your invitees.

You can change your name or nickname at any time, but not your email address, which is fixed for security reasons.
